Was I being naïve again?

Recently, I called Michigan’s SB 637 “a wasteful, GOP-crafted distraction.” The proposed law would,

I assumed that the legislation was just another tiresome attempt by Republicans to pander to the Christian Right while stalling efforts by President Obama to grow the economy.  Now I’m wondering if this sudden, out-of-the-blue interest in requiring children to Pledge Allegiance to the Flag every day has anything to do with the new flag:  The Cross Spangled Banner, which “contributes to the course of history and can help bring salvation to millions.”

Obviously the flag is garish (resembling something that I’d whip up in photoshop as a joke, frankly); there’s no doubt that dragging this thing into the classroom would be unconstitutional; but, given the unfathomable hubris of Christian Nationalists, who knows how it’ll be used.  We do know that “the idea for the flag was motivated by 2 Chronicles 7:14,”

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Liberty Council is live-tweeting The Awakening Conference: Equipping and Empowering a New Revolution (#Awakening2011, #Awakening) and, for the heck of it, I thought I’d pull some of their tweets on various topics.  In reverse chronological order, here’s a snapshot from this morning as they pander to African-Americans:

  • Martin Luther led movement & Christians led abolition of slavery in civil rights movement in America
  • All human rights issues & movements led by Christians William Wilberforce led UK in abolition of slavery
  • Greeks & Romans embraced slavery … Enlightenment period repackaged slavery
  • Americans cherish freedom from slavery … result of Judeo-Christian society
  • People are uniting around shared values because of increasing threats to faith & freedom!
  • Something new happening! Spirit of revolution awakening people & uniting communities across racial ethnic & generations
  • Lila Rose NOW! Live Action UCLA student on Planned Parenthood’s repeated aiding & abetting pimps of underage sex slaves!

Have you heard that, later this month, (probable) Republican presidential hopefuls Newt Gingrich and Mike Huckabee will join Tea Party Queen Michele Bachmann (R-MN), pseudohistorian David Barton and other notables for a nationwide webcast?  They’ll be campaigning ministering to “God’s people” about American HIStory:

…(T)he founders of our country drew their inspiration, wisdom, and direction from the Bible. Beginning in colonial times, church leaders spoke to their congregations about the events and issues of the day in the context of Biblical truth. Rediscover God in America will lay a foundation of critical knowledge for your congregation. They’ll learn how to interpret and assess current events in light of God’s Word, as our founding fathers did, and how to respond Biblically and take action that aligns with His truth.

A just and prosperous nation is born and sustained by truth, not compromise. Join with thousands of churches across the nation! Bring the truth about God and America to your congregation and community.

Just think.  Newt, Mike, Michele and David beamed straight to your church’s Jumbo-Tron in order to, um, educate your flock about how to vote the Founding Fathers’ actual political intentions.

As for the politicians and hockers of pseudohistory?  Hey, with friends like these willing pastors, who needs the Koch Brothers anyway?

And, there’s no telling which other likely GOP presidential contenders will add their names to the list of celebs at “Rediscovering God in America.”  Actually, most of the other possible nominees (Donald Trump is an obvious exception) would fit right in.  A rather scary thought.

But, if you, like me, would rather not think about it too much, look instead at the RGA logo.  Why does it clearly incorporate “Obama 2008” logo design elements? Or is my overactive imagination acting up again?

By the way, if you squint and look at it just so, the Obama logo reads “I-S-L-A-M,” which is racist.

Hi, Everybody.  This is Pastor Steven Anderson.

Pastor Steven

Pastor Steven recently read an article reporting that chickens and T. rex shared a common ancestor.

Of course, he thinks it said that dinosaurs turned into chickens (like most creationists, Steven doesn’t understand the concept of creatures descending from a common ancestor).   So, to share the laugh with his flock, he has proposed an art contest to mock the idea.

Evolution Art Contest

2. Entries must be submitted by February 9, 2011
3. Submit your entries to info@faithfulwordbaptist.org or leave a comment with a link to your entry at http://sanderson1611.blogspot.com/2011/01/evolution-art-contest.html
4. Entries can be made using any medium (pencil or ink drawing, painting, computer drawing, photoshop, etc, etc)
5. Entries will be voted on between February 10 and February 14 at http://www.sanderson1611.blogspot.com

Gee whiz.  I think atheists can do way better than this, don’t you?

[scratching head]

I know.  While I’m brainstorming, I’m going to park Pastor Steve in a safe place.

Bryan Fischer (American Family Association) thinks that plans to move the murder trial of Jared Loughner from Tucson is a “terrible, terrible idea, and contrary to biblical concepts of justice.”  A change of venue not only “robs” Tucson citizens of their God-given right “to see that the innocent blood of their loved ones, friends, and family members is avenged”; the American system of justice is unduly wasteful.

It’s worthy of note that there was no system of incarceration in ancient Israel. A crime against property was taken care of through restitution plus a substantial penalty. A crime against life was taken care of through execution. Think of the money we could save if we returned to something approximating this simple but elegant system of justice.

The savings would, of course, be offset by the added expense of having to hunt down and kill people guilty of “crimes against life” (as defined by Mr. Fischer’s bible).  Wouldn’t it be easier and cheaper to just relocate Bryan to a Middle Eastern country that already practices his notion of “justice”?

A:  Because they have to be as long as their data conflicts with Genesis.

Ken Ham (Answers in Genesis):

Now, if the book of Genesis is an allegory, then sin is an allegory, the Fall is an allegory, the need for a Savior is an allegory, and Adam is an allegory—but if we are all descendants of an allegory, where does that leave us?  It destroys the foundation of all Christian doctrine—it destroys the foundation of the gospel.
